A logo for a Tuft Kid

Tufting is a process that uses yarn and/or threads that are pushed through a flat material to create textile patterns and illustrations. It had been long associated with the production of carpets and upholstery, but has recently seen a resurgence with artists today creating new and clever designs. You can see reels and photos of some beautiful and intricate artwork from cartoon characters to landscapes.

A young entrepreneur named Andie approached me with a project for her new creative business. While she was growing up her father would lovingly call her a “tough kid”, which was the inspiration for the name she came up with for her tufting business: “Tuft Kid.”

By the time she reached out to me she had already established herself with several clients and a diverse portfolio of tufted products. Since an event was coming up where she could vend her wares to the public, she needed a logo that not only represented her work, but herself too.

Before we started any work, I sent her a logo discovery form based on my experience working on logos for a few clients. The form helps people elaborate on what they envision their logo to be. I reviewed some of the keywords in the descriptions she gave me. “Cute”, “sparks joy”… were some of the main words and phrases that she provided. She noted that she wanted bubbly, organic lines and letters in her logo, and shared how her father‘s words helped inspire her business. I imagined her and father together playing when she was child.

My first logo study involved a simple rendition of Andie as a “kid,” with her hair made of thread. Upon review she asked if a ball of thread could also be added to the logo. After a bit of collaboration and back and forth, we built a final logo for her business.

Once the logo was finished, I presented it in various ways to help convey the possibilities of how her logo could be displayed on different materials now and into the future.

By displaying her brand this way it helped make it come alive. I wanted to show her the logo living in the context of what she would slowly build around it – a look and feel that her current and future customers would eventually associate with it: lots of color, creativity, and joy.

My part was done, but Andie’s adventure was just beginning. Masipag yarn!
