Illustration work for “The Bitter Melon”

Illustration work for “The Bitter Melon”

In this collaboration with Dr. Jocelyn Francisco, I illustrated an ampalaya (bitter melon) character for her book “The Bitter Melon.”

The story follows a misunderstood vegetable, navigating their emotions to find a way to acceptance and happiness. This is great for children and adults alike, and helps highlight mental health awareness for communities where information and support are limited.

As Jocelyn put it, “By honoring emotions, creating healthy boundaries and practicing self-compassion the Bitter Melon is learning to feel safe, loved, calm and respected.”

I based the illustrations in the style I use for my Filipino Food Art project, like my Filipino vegetable ABC’s.
