Learn Filipino Sign Language (enroll until May 7)
The De La Salle CSB School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies is open for enrollment. It’s open to Deaf and hearing folks, and can be taken from the comfort of your own home!
I took FSL 1 classes at this school a few years back and it was a fun experience. I’m still friends with some of the people I met, and to this day still use basic FSL to communicate with some of them.
Why should hearing people learn sign language?
To become better “listeners”
Sign language, like any language, opens your world to a community of people you’d otherwise never correspond with. And unlike French or Spanish which are popular “foreign” languages that people learn, sign language connects you with others in a new way. It strengthens your ability to connect with people through gestures and facial expressions. It makes you more expressive, and more attentive too.
Understand Deaf culture and community
Deaf people are also overlooked and ignored in terms of job opportunities, relationships in general, and even mere everyday conversation. Everyone lives a full life and has a story to tell, and from my experience the Deaf community has more to say than those who hear.
Keep viral transmission low!
Did you know the likelihood of catching COVID or other airborne viruses are way higher when speaking? By using sign language, we further decrease our vulnerability to such diseases. Everybody knows how hard it is to speak with a mask and face shield on.
Fees and international students
Since FSL classes are online this year, the school has been able to welcome learners from around the world. The fee is P3,500 pesos, or about $75 US dollars. The school’s bank swift code is provided in the registration pages linked below.
