From banana cue to isaw, I’ve always appreciated a fast, fresh-cooked, affordable bite on-the-go. So after designing materials for my own wedding, I went back to work and started sketching ideas for minimalistic street food art posters. I made a list of some of the more popular street food I’ve seen from Luzon to Mindanao, and placed them in these simple art pieces. If you or anyone you know might like them, they’re available as printable downloads on my Filipino Food Art Etsy shop here.

I first started drawing the balut artwork, trying to figure out a way to depict this popular delicacy among our Southeast Asian neighbors (and misunderstood by our Western ones). I decided to go with salt and an egg as a simple representation of this hot meal to-go, typically enjoyed before or after dinner. Or even better, after drinks.

The salt shaker may be out of place for most balut aficionados, but I’d hope it drives a message home to those unfamiliar with balut: it’s good on its own, but even better with some salt and spice.

Same goes for fishbol or fish ball. These hot deep fried cakes of fish and or squid are ready hot out of the kawali or wok, but they’re even better left to soak in a cup of sweet and spicy sauce.

To offset the savory in this gallery of Filipino street food, I threw in sorbetes and banana cue. Either one makes for perfect merienda. The banana cue is great between lunch and the end of a work day. The sorbetes, on a hot summer afternoon in the shade.

Hapon or afternoon is that crucial time when you need a bit of sugar to boost you through the rest of your day. Unless of course it raises your blood sugar too high, and you get you even more tired. If that’s you, black coffee might be best. But that isn’t as street food as the rest of the delicacies chosen for this set.
